The Introvert and the Joy Of Solo Travel

A time to recharge.

Introverts are well-known for wanting their alone time and for me, travel is no exception. I do enjoy the trips I take with my family and friends. I have wonderful memories from those adventures and I look forward to many more, including but the occasional trip by myself is one of the most soul-cleansing things I do.

I’ve traveled on my own for many years, usually to and from conferences where I was scheduled to give presentations and where I knew other people. In the last couple of years, I’ve decided to venture on my own, just because. I took a solo trip to Salem, Massachusetts, in February 2020, right before COVID hit, and it was very chilly but wonderful. The pandemic threw a bit of a wrench into my plans, but I managed to get in another solo trip to Salem last September when COVID numbers were down and I’m actually back in Salem right now as I write this. I only go for two nights at a time, just long enough to settle in and explore without disrupting home life too much.

Why go to Salem so often? I had ancestors living in Salem before, during, and after the time of the witch trials, although they were not involved. I love to go and investigate my family history, as well as the history of the area. Also, as a writer, I’m working on two books that date from the seventeenth century, so research and…
