For the last several years being an American has been difficult, especially since 2016. There have been moments, fleeting as they are. I cried happy tears that we elected a female Vice-President in 2020. I felt proud when same-sex marriage was legalized in 2015, even if it was a long time in coming. But I’ve been disappointed and angry more often than not for a while.

The campaign and presidency of Trump unleashed and exposed an incredibly ugly side of this country. It became acceptable to publicly spew racist, elitist, and misongynistic beliefs, just like he does. His followers support a leader who thought it was fine to openly mock handicapped people, to creep into the dressing room of underage girls, to rape women because he had power, and commit all manner of illegal business dealings. He has since been found liable for sexual assault and guilty of covering up illegal payments in courts of law, among many other offenses. He will, hopefully, be tried for inciting a rebellion against our government, which is treason, and yet his followers still think he’s the best thing next to Jesus Christ. Actually, they are basically rejecting the Jesus they claim to follow by supporting this threat to our democracy.
