Tell Me a Ghost Story

It’s that time of year…

Like many people, I’m a sucker for a good ghost story. I love a good yarn anytime of the year, but October provides the perfect setting, at least in my part of the world. It’s getting dark earlier, the leaves are changing colors and falling, and it’s getting downright chilly, a perfect time for a fire and spooky tales.

My criteria for a good ghost story has evolved over the years. Whereas Girl Scout Camp used to provide spine-tingling urban legends of hitchhiking hands latched onto cars and phantom prom dates, I now prefer stories with a firm base in reality. Every ‘Grey Lady’ is not Anne Boleyn, Katherine Howard, or some other tragic queen. Elvis simply cannot be everywhere. How many places can a famous ghost haunt at one time? It must be exhausting.

I don’t like the horror aspect of Halloween or ghost stories. Axe-wielding maniacs and bloody serial killers aren’t what the holiday is about for me. I like the mystery, the uncertainty of what happens when we die, the spookiness that isn’t going to chop me up into a million pieces, but will give me some delicious goosebumps.

I like stories of unexplained things, as I have had a lot of those things happen in my life. Here are just a few from my store.

When I was eighteen, I got to play Sandy in Grease for a burgeoning community…
