A letter to our invisible roommates

Dear House Ghosts,

You’ve been here a long time, at least two of you have been here longer than we have, if you’re the ones who are still around.

You’ve been a pretty decent lot for the last twenty years, not scary, except for a couple of questionable incidents. Making a key picture fly off the wall during a conversation about said picture made our guests a little jumpy that one time. And let’s not forget about the Very Serious Conversation we had to have about leaving the kids alone. You did well and have respected that ever since, thank you.

Your tricks have changed a bit since we moved in. You don’t play with the lights very much anymore and it’s been more than a year since you left the washing machine lid wide open. Opening the washing machine lid used to be your favorite game, remember? At first I thought one of the kids or my husband was doing it, but it would happen when I was the only one home. Once, you even opened it when I was in the same room practicing my dance steps for a show. I had the wash running while I was down there, the cycle finished, and then I turned around to see the lid sticking straight up in the air. I took that as my cue to go back upstairs.

The cold spots don’t happen as often anymore, either, which I don’t miss. Maybe it’s not as…
