Reading your body’s signals

I worked as a church secretary for about a year. It was the church where I was a member, a beautiful old building, fairly large, pleasantly haunted. (More on that another time.) I worked alone many afternoons. The pastor was out on medical leave for much of my time there, or was out fulfilling her duties with meetings and such, as pastors do. The other employees worked a bit of a different schedule than I did and many of the meetings and classes were in the mornings or in the evenings. This meant that my afternoons were generally quiet and I could get a lot of work done.

The doors were kept locked for safety reasons. There was a doorbell for visitors and I could see who was there on the camera in my office.

One afternoon, when I was there alone, the doorbell rang. It was a man. I went down to see what he wanted. As I descended the stairs to the door, I began to have a significant physical reaction. My gut twisted and I felt the need to run, now. I felt silly. He looked perfectly harmless, after all, and since he had already seen me, I felt like I had no choice but to see what he wanted.

I opened the door just a crack and said hello and asked what I could do for him.

He explained that he had been a member of the church many years before and wondered if he could come…
